Samenvatting
Through sea level rise, water is becoming an increasing threat to Zeeland. In 1960, the Eastern Scheldt barrier was built to protect Zeeland and its inhabitants from the sea. But unfortunately, it cannot withstand a sea level rise of one meter.

Shared Concepts asked students from the HZ University of Applied Sciences during the first semester of school year 2021-2022 to investigate the possibility of raising De Banjaard, called phase 1. During the first semester of the 2022-2023 school year, the students were instructed to go into the previous concept of phase 1 and elaborate further from their own vision, called phase 2.
De Banjaard is a sandbank off the coast of Westerschouwen with the potential to protect Zeeland’s life from the sea. During phase 2, the possibilities for raising the island through hard measures combined with ecological applications will be investigated. A concept has been drawn up in which the various sides are discussed, with De Banjaard as a central point of view at all times.
Phase 2 describes a concept of creating a salt marsh protected by a breakwater dam, which is further described in chapter 3. On the salt marshes there is an opportunity to experiment with aquaculture to make De Banjaard profitable. Chapter 4 describes the ecological implementations, including the possibility of experimenting with aquaculture but also where ecological implementations can help strengthen the island against erosion and provide more biodiversity.
